Otoplasty

What is otoplasty?

Otoplasty is any surgery that alters the appearance of the ears.

Does my child need otoplasty?

Performing otoplasty does not affect the function of the ears.  However, it does affect the appearance.  In some children, the angle the ears form with the head makes them appear to stick out.  This does not affect hearing but may result in teasing or the child feeling differently about themselves.  If this is your child, you may consider otoplasty for your child.  This simple procedure will result in the decreased visibility of the ears.

How old does my child have to be to have otoplasty done?

If you have decided with your child that otoplasty is the right decision, it is recommended to perform the procedure at around 5 years of age.  This is because the ears have undergone their major growth and it is before children enter formal schooling, preventing them from potentially awkward or uncomfortable social situations.

However, it is not uncommon for younger or older children to have this procedure done.  Your pediatric otolaryngologist will discuss the appropriate timing with you.
