Tonsils & Adenoids

Tonsils and adenoids are lymph tissue, part of the body’s immune system. While they may help immunity, they may also become problematic and more problematic than beneficial. Tonsils are located in the back of the mouth and adenoids are located in the back of the nose.

What affects tonsils and adenoids?

Tonsils and adenoids may cause many problems including:

  • recurrent infections (throat or ear)
  • enlargement causing breathing, swallowing, and sleep problems
  • abscesses around the tonsils
  • chronic tonsillitis
  • collections within the tonsils that produce foul-smelling formations, called tonsil stones/tonsilloliths

What are symptoms of tonsil problems?

Tonsillitis is an infection in one or both tonsils. Signs or symptoms include:

  • Red and swollen tonsils
  • A white or yellow coating on the tonsils
  • Sore throat
  • Uncomfortable or painful swallowing
  • Swollen lymph nodes (glands) in the neck
  • Fever
  • Bad breath

Enlarged tonsils (without infection) may also cause symptoms including:

  • snoring
  • behavior problems that may be related to sleep apnea
  • sleep apnea
  • muffled voice
  • difficulty swallowing

What are symptoms of adenoid problems?

If your or your child’s adenoids are enlarged, it may be hard for them to breathe through their nose. Other signs of enlargement are:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Nose sounds “blocked” when the person speaks
  • Noisy breathing during the day
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • Recurrent sinusitis
  • Snoring at night
  • Breathing stops during sleep (sleep apnea)

When should my child see a doctor?

Children should be brought to the attention of their doctor whenever they have any of the above symptoms. Additionally, if you are concerned about your child, bring him or her in for evaluation.

How are tonsil and adenoid diseases treated?

Treatment varies depending on the problem the child suffers from. It may include:

  • antibiotics
  • nasal sprays
  • oral antihistamines (allergy medications)
  • saline gargles (for tonsil stones)
  • removal of the tonsils and/or adenoids
  • ear tubes/pressure equalization tubes
